The Scottish fold is a breed developed in Scotland by William Ross. Its ancestor is an ordinary white colored barn cat. The unique feature of this breed is its folded ears, which makes it look like a pixie or an owl. This folded ear is the result of a spontaneous mutation of a dominant gene that could not form completely.
It is a medium sized cat having short and dense fur with a coat that is resilient. Its eyes are large and round and due to its being spaced broadly, it gives a sweet look to its round face. It has a curved profile and a short nose. On the whole it has an impish appearance.
Scottish folds are available in all colors. They are very sturdy but adaptable by nature. They are comfortable in all kinds of situation whether it is a strange hotel room or a room full of children and dogs. This nature makes them a favorite for shows and competitions but it should be remembered that only folded ear Scottish cats are allowed to participate in the competitions.
The newly born kittens have straight ears; it is only after twelve weeks the breeder can determine whether it is a normal straight ear Scottish cat or a folded ear Scottish cat. The normal straight ear cat is used for breeding so it has it own importance. They are not very demanding and they easily adapt to other animals which makes them a lovable and friendly pet.
